Science on Tap – Wildlife Tracking

December 17, 2024 @ 6:30 pm 8:30 pm

Join us for our December Science on Tap Presentation from Abi Fergus!! Science on Tap is a 30-45 minute presentation about a science related topic followed by audience Q&A.
Abi will be sharing their presentation: Wildlife Tracking: Taking Another Animal’s Perspective.
Abi Fergus (they/them) is a level III Tracker through Tracker Certification North America and learned much of their tracking knowledge while working for Mashkiiziibi Natural Resources Department from 2017-2022. They also contracted with Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe’s Wildlife Program to help establish a Ma’iingan (gray wolf) tracking and monitoring program. Abi is passionate about teaching and learning tracking as a way to connect with ourselves, our ecosystems, and the other life we share our ecosystems with.
Here’s a snippet of what we’ll learn:
Tracking is a life way indigenous to all people, but is not as commonly practiced today. Wildlife tracking as a way of studying our ecosystems and the other animals we share them with can offer insight into locally adapted behavior, diets, and habitat use. Abi will review the basics of learning how to recognize and identify the tracks and sign animals leave behind and share tracking stories which reflect lessons about individual species and their habitats.
