History Festival: Geology of the Apostle Islands

July 8, 2025 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

Sepia-toned historical photo from 1904 showing a rocky shoreline with a small dock and cabin surrounded by trees. Handwritten notes describe the location as "Devil's Park" near Houghton Point, near Washburn, Wisconsin. The photo notes that Capt. Frank Brown ran excursion boats in the area. The sandstone quarry is mentioned as being a short distance away.

The Apostle Islands are referred to as the Crown Jewels of Wisconsin be-cause of their spectacular scenery and geology. This stunning landscape has been created by the action of glaciers, rivers, and most dramatically by the erosive forces of Lake Superior. This slideshow presentation will explore the factors that have influenced the spectacular coastal landforms such as sea caves and arches that have made the Islands famous.
