DESCRIPTION:The Washburn Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot is back! \n\n\n\nSame day registration is available starting at 8am at the Washburn Chamber Office with the fun run starting at 8:30am. The cost is $30 per person through November 26th and $40 for day of registration. All proceeds go to Homecoming 2030. This year finishers will get a special edition pin. \n\n\n\nParticipants may run or walk the course along the shore of Lake Superior. The Washburn Area Chamber office is home base providing walk in registration\, start\, and finish. You can view the course on our website – HERE \n\n\n\nThis is a rain (snow) or shine event. We will only cancel if the temperature is low enough to cause harm. No refunds. \n\n\n\nThe Washburn Area Chamber of Commerce is covered by general liability\, but does not have or provide medical coverage for participant injuries incurred in the normal course of the activity or event. It is advised and recommended that all participants make arrangements for their own medical coverage. You will be asked to sign a participant waiver the day of the event.

DESCRIPTION:For our November Science on Tap presentation\, join Peggy Burkeman\, a retired National Parks Service biologist\, as we dive into the topic of Canada Yew! \n\n\n\nThe Apostle Islands National Lakeshore hosts one of the best landscape scale representations of Canada yew (Taxus canadensis) in the Great Lakes states. As a keystone species\, Canada yew has a considerable influence on the park’s ecosystems related to its abundance. Learn which plant and animal species benefit through interactions with this important species in the Lakeshore. \n\n\n\nPeggy retired at the end of May after 22 years at Apostle Islands. Prior to that she worked as a Wildlife Biologist for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service\, and held Fire and Landscape Ecologist positions for the U.S. Forest Service. She also completed a dissertation titled “Enhancing human motivation in group settings relative to climate change”\, and currently volunteers to promote action on the issue. \n\n\n\nScience on Tap happens every third Tuesday of the month at the Alley Restaurant in Ashland. There’s a 30-45 minute presentation from a speaker followed by an audience Q&A. We recommend arriving early to secure your beverage/food and a seat.

Bayfield resident Fred Clark had the chance to take that trip this spring on a 650 mile sail crossing from the Faroe Islands to the Lofoten Islands of Norway\, and had the time to explore a bit on land in these two spectacular parts of the world. Fred will share photos and stories of this trip and the coastal communities along the way. \n\n\n\nBar will be open starting at 4pm.  This is a free event. However\, an RSVP helps us plan and helps us keep you up to date in case something changes.

Hudson became a leader\, educator\, and founder\, developing and implementing programs including the prison newspaper Stateville Speaks and the Building Block Program\, a peer mentoring program led by incarcerated people within the Illinois Department of Corrections. Hudson’s work has been featured in media including the BBC and the Chicago Tribune\, and it is the subject of the documentary Stateville Calling. \n\n\n\nHe was released in September 2020 when Governor Pritzker commuted his life sentence and subsequently became the Director of Education for the Illinois Prison Project.
