From Death Row to Deliverance: A Journey of Hope, Healing and Justice

October 12 @ 11:00 am 12:30 pm

Renaldo Hudson is an educator, minister, and community organizer focused on ending perpetual punishment in Illinois.

After being sentenced to death row, Hudson spent thirty-seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. During his incarceration, Hudson worked alongside fellow death row members and outside organizers to push for an end to the death penalty. Hudson became a leader, educator, and founder, developing and implementing programs including the prison newspaper Stateville Speaks and the Building Block Program, a peer mentoring program led by incarcerated people within the Illinois Department of Corrections. Hudson’s work has been featured in media including the BBC and the Chicago Tribune, and it is the subject of the documentary Stateville Calling.

He was released in September 2020 when Governor Pritzker commuted his life sentence and subsequently became the Director of Education for the Illinois Prison Project.
